This scandal involved many profession athletes. This had great affect in the MLB, Bonds' trainer, Greg Anderson and BALCO head Victor Conte, were not subpoened in California by the House Committee for investigation. As a result of pressure from Congress, baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association started implementing more regulations and stressed significant punishment if the liable party tested positive for performance enhancing substances. Barry Bonds has surpassed the all time home run record. Bonds' trainer was providing illegal performance enhancers to Bonds and other athletes. Bonds had admitted that he did use a clear substance and lotion given to him by his trainer but had no idea that they were any sort of performance enhancers. Bonds claimed that to his knowledge, the substances given to him were legal to treat his arthritis. Bonds has had many criminal hearings but has yet to see any jail time. Another athlete to have been connected with this scandal is Marion Jones, an Olympic runner. She spent months in jail after confessing her guilt after pleaing guilty to perjury. Raphael Palmeiro, a great player, who earlier declared in Congress that he never took steroids, tested positive in a random test. He was later suspended ten days. Many assumed prior to this that he would be a future inducted hall of famer. His career was over that year and will never be inducted into MLB’s most prestigous honor. Steroids have destroyed the public image of many professionals.
