I suppose I should explain somethigns first, though. You should understand my criteria that I use for rating a film. See, I have very broad tastes, and it will show if you continue to stop by week after week. I judge each movie based on its own, individual merits. I don't rate "Scream 2" based on "Scream," for insatance. They are two separate movies, and I will rate both on their own terms. And that's basically it. I look at the budget of a film, and wether or not the filmmakers utilized the money they had at their disposal (wether it be 2 bucks, or ten million bucks!) So, for instance, I would say that the original "Night of the Living Dead" was brilliantly executed on it's miniscule budget, whereas "Jurassic Park: The Lost World" wasted every one the million dollars it spent, cuz it was a lousy movie. See what I mean?
I also take into account the year a film came out, what the films intentions are (even if they don't quite come across on screen.) I keep in mind what audience the filmmakers had in mind, and wether it was intended as an "art" film or just a fun, summer blockbuster. Like, "Crash" and "Armageddon" were both great films, in my opinion, but they were made for completely different audiences, and/or tastes.
And, of course, please keep in mind, these reviews are MY opinion, and MY opinion only. i don't expect every one to agree. I don't WANT them to. That wouldn't be any fun. I will respect your opinions, if you only respect mine. Like I said, I'm always open to discussion.
I will post probably 2 reviews per week. Once in awhile, maybe more. Depends on my availabilty of space.
I use a "DOT" system to rate the movies.
A near-perfect movie. As close to perfection as mere mortals can get.
Pretty good movie. Not all THAT good, but it's better than average.
Mediocre. So-so. Could've been alot better, but it just didn't quite make it.
Sucks. Worse than sucks. Will we ever evolve? Not if this keeps up.
One other thing I should mention. From time to time, you may find a film being reviewed in here that can't QUITE be labelled as "true" horror or "true" SF. I will sometimes review films that i think are of interest to genre fans for one reason or another. For instance, I consider "Face/Off" to be science-fiction, to a certain extent, and therefore would probably review here. Same with movies like "Crash," "Taxi Driver," or "Midnight Express." Films that have elements of genre work, even if they aren't considered genre work.
And while you're at it, check out my list: THE TOP 100 HORROR FILMS OF ALL-TIME. It's unofficial, but everything that's good usually is.
