BACK IN THE DAY

Feeling caged I went outside
limped around the yard
thinking of the things I've tried
and realizing I tried too hard
easing the pain should be easier than this
but there's too many things I miss
that long ago I chose to disregard

Back in the day
we used to say
"Let's go and play"
even if the skies were gray
we went out there anyway
back in the day
back in the day

Disappointment was brought in with ribbons and bows
seemed good to move on and forget
But I moved on to thorns, leaving the rose
leaving the petals alone and wet
rust set forth along my line
I should've looked and seen the sign
and stopped before I reached regret

Back in the day
we used to say
"Let's go and play"
even if the skies were gray
we went out there anyway
back in the day
back in the day

The idea for this one came from my cousin Pete. It was a sort of
reflective statement about something we were talking about. He said something
like, "That was back in the day." I branched out from there, and created this
thing about someone possibly thinking to themself about the past, and wishing
they could go back. It could also reflect a lost love. It could be both,
naturally. I guess I wrote the damn thing, I get to decide what it means. But,
I don't want to dictate interpretations, so....
