DEADLOCKED IN COMPETITION

You’ve applied for better health
I’ve auditioned for better wealth
I hope you get what you deserve
I hope to get what I reserve
what a curve we’ve been thrown
life, I’ve known, can on its own
make a sudden surprising switch
and neither of us can hit that pitch

You’ve compared your life to mine
I’ve noticed we share the same zodiac sign
I hope you find your way to the top
I hope to keep climbing and never stop
and never drop into the hole
life takes its toll on your soul
and your wallet doesn’t gain an ounce
so we can’t fall, ‘cause neither of us can bounce

You’ve tried to make the best of things
I’ve tried to make better what my life brings
I hope you can see to walk the path
I hope to run it and use my math
avoid its wrath and never fail
but life can unveil a sharp, rusty nail
so watch where you step and don’t step on me
I guess neither of us can really see

You’ve paid your debts, but achieved no goals
I’ve achieved some, but my budget has holes
I hope you learn to follow through
I hope to learn to pay every due
and I know it’s too bad we’ve done this alone
on our own, if only we’d known
to work together in this race
then both of us could come in first place
