Egg Laying

Green Iguanas lay eggs similar to a chicken. The female iguana will lay eggs, even if she has been mated or not, after two years of age. In that case, it's time to start building a nesting site. This will require a litter pan or something similar filled with potting soil. Since female iguanas dig burrows in nature, you will need to provide a box of some kind to be turned upside-down and placed over the pan. An enterance should be made in the front of the box, and there should be adequate space for the iguana to turn around and move about in the nesting area. Temperatures in the nesting area should be around 30-32 degrees celcius. It is important to keep these temperatures during the time of egg laying to ensure all the eggs are layed. A gravid iguana will become lethargic and will become seriously ill if all the eggs are not layed.

Egg laying may take up to 1-2 weeks, depending upon the health of the iguana. After all eggs are layed, it's a good idea to count them, and report the number to your veterinarian. A high number usually indicates a healthy iguana. Discard all infertile eggs. It is important to do a post laying checkup with your vet to insure all eggs have been layed. After all the eggs are layed, you will need to provide lots of fresh water, and plenty of food. The female iguana needs an increase in food and water to replenish the nutrients her body used to make the eggs.
