Prologue:
My name is Demeter. I am a Jellicle cat. My mate is Munkustrap, future leader of the Jellicle tribe. Most say I have a sad past, I guess I must agree. I will never regain my innocence, for I have seen so much death, mercy, hatred, danger, anger, sadness, and pure evil, and it seems, from one family. Macavity’s family, I shudder even to hear that name. My goal is to erase that family line, the family that has caused such pain to my tribe and me. Your probably confused, mabey I should explain…
Demeter's Pain:
Chapter One:
Decritso started on his way towards the Jellicle Ball. It was his fifthtenth Ball (he was very old as you can imagine) and this time he felt confident that this was the year he would go to the Heaviside Layer. He had felt it. He owned a human doctor, so he knew all about medicine and how to heal wounds, so everyone just proclaimed him the doctor or healer of the Jellicle tribe and everyone, especially the kittens, called him Dr. D. It was really a lot easier than "Decritso" anyway. As he turned the corner of the ally he heard footsteps coming his way. He curiously turned around and saw a cat. He was a ginger cat and very tall and thin. His fur was dusty and his whiskers were uncombed. Decritso stopped a waited for the cat to catch up to see what he wanted. As the cat approached, Decritso knew this was an evil cat, he could see it in his eyes.
"Are you the doctor the Jellicle’s call "Dr. D"?" the cat asked. His voice was so deep it seemed to make the ground tremble.
" I am. Who are you and what can I help you with sir?" Decritso asked, trying not to show his fear.
"My name is Exceon. I need you to help me. One of my servants is ill, maybe dieing. Come with me."
Decritso thought, *Should I help this evil cat? I am already late for the Ball. But for a cat’s life I could be little late. * "Alright I’ll come with you." Exceon said nothing and turned around and started walking away. Decritso sighed and quickly walked after.
" Um…. no, a mater of fact I haven’t seen him. I wonder what happened." Abrito said trying to think.
" Oh well! Mabey next year. Abrito how would you like to go to the Heaviside Layer?"Old Deuteronomy asked.
Abrito grinned. "Oh thank you Deuteronomy!" Abrito exclaimed. Old Deuteronomy smiled.
"Come on then."
"Calioto?"
"Yah Demeter?"
" Where do you think Salretra is?"
Calioto sighed. "She is with Exceon I know it! If only I knew where his hideout is! But don’t worry little Demeter. We’ll see her again. I can feel it." He licked her face and crept into his box.
Demeter sighed. One tear trickled down her cheek. *Oh how I wish I could see my older sister. I hope she’s all right. * Demeter started to fall asleep when she heard footsteps down the alley. She jerked her head up. "Calioto….Calioto!"
"Wha……uh…what’s goi…" "Shhh! Quiet, somebody’s coming!" Calioto peeked his head out of his box. "I don’t…oh wait, I hear something. Your right someone is coming!" Calioto jumped out of the box and tiptoed over to the corner and peered around. He gasped and turned around and rushed back to Demeter’s box. "Demeter, it’s Exceon and another cat! He’s headed this way!" Demeter opened her mouth to say something but Calioto put a hand over her mouth. "Demeter I’m going to follow them. Sooner or later Exceon will have to go back to his hideout. Then I will find Salretra. Demeter, you must stay here. I don’t want you to get hurt."
"But Calioto I…" Demeter started.
"No, I’m the oldest, I will go," Calioto said, "your still young. Exceon’s lair is no place for a kitten."
"Okay", Demeter said sadly.
Calioto lifted her chin up and looked into her eyes, which now had a tear. She looked so much like their mother who had passed on several years before. "Be brave Demeter", Calioto said as he started to walk of "Just think when I am back you will have a sister again!"
Demeter smiled sadly and said "Good luck, I love you!"
"Me too, Demeter, me too!" Then he disappeared around the corner.
"That’s not fair you got a head start!"
"Did not!"
"Did to!"
"Did not!"
"Did to!"
"Did not!"
"Did…"
"That’s enough!" cried Jellylorum; "Don’t you think you mature enough to be quiet!"
Munkustrap and Alonzo looked at each other. "We’re sorry Jellylorum,"replied Munkustrap. "Yah, me too,"Alonzo said staring at the floor.
"Oh, I’m sorry boys, I over reacted. Can you find something quieter to do?"Jellylorum asked.
"Okay," they chorused. Munkustrap and Alonzo stepped out of the garden shed where Jellylorum was sewing.
"You know, she’s right we need to be more mature. I mean someday I’m going to be the leader of this tribe and I don’t think the Jellicles would like an immature leader!" Munkustrap said.
"Yah, you’re right, but before we start acting mature, can we play one more game of tag?" Alonzo asked.
Munkustrap smiled, " Okay but I’m not "it"!"
"But I was "it" last time!"
"Was not!"
"Was to!"
"Was not!"
“Was to!"
Jellylorum shook her head; she was getting a big headache.
Chapter 2
Decritso followed the ginger cat though many alley and corners, finally the cat stopped in front of an old abandoned construction site. Exceon stopped in front of a door marked T7. "Here is your patient doctor," he said as he led Decritso in. In the middle of the floor Decritso saw a young cat. She was laying unconisous, bleeding all over the floor. Decritso kneeled beside the lifeless body and placed a hand on her head.
"Father?"
Decritso turned around to see a young tom. He looked exactly like Exceon. "Who’s that?" he pointed at Decritso.
"Macavity, this is not the time! Go away!"
Macavity slowly turned and walked out the door. Decritso looked back at dying cat. She struggled and looked up at Decritso and stared into his eyes. Decritso knew, she had less than a few minutes left to live.
He started to cry, but stopped suddenly when he saw Exceon’s ears twitch. He slowly looked around the room. "She has been beaten very badly", suddenly the stranger cat said. It didn’t take very long before Calioto was trembling with rage. * How dare he hurt my sister! *
" Simply discipline", Exceon said, shrugging.
"She is dying, there is nothing I can do." Exceon sighed, "there goes another one". The cat placed his fingers on Salretra’s eyes and shut them.
Calioto burst out of the shadows and pushed the cat away from his sister. " No! Salretra! No!" he cried as he kneeled by his lifeless sister. " I will never forget this day, I’ll remember this day till I die," tears were streaming down his face as he glared at Exceon, "I swear I will avenge this day, you’ll pay for my sister’s life!" He leaped towards Exceon, claws bared.
Exceon turned and scratched Calioto in mid-air, sending him flying. Calioto was back on his feet in a flash. Suddenly Demeter pushed her head in the opening that Calioto had first come in.
"Calioto!" she cried as she saw him fighting with Exceon. Calioto and Exceon were slashing, biting, and clawing at each other.
Calioto quickly glanced at Demeter. "Demeter…run!", he cried.
Demeter couldn’t move for she saw her sister’s body laying lifeless on the floor. "No! Salretra!". Demeter ran in and stared at the body. She was crying hysterically now. She screamed and threw herself at Exceon.
Exceon blocked her blow and slashed her across the face. "Demeter!", Calioto cried. The distraction was all Exceon needed, he rushed forward and stuck Calioto in the face. Demeter stared in horror as Calioto slamed into the wall and collapes. Everything was quiet
Demeter stared at him."No! No! Calioto! No!", Demeter cried as she ran towards Calioto. She kneeled down on the floor beside him. " Calioto, please, don’t leave me."
Calioto turned his head, in her arms, to look at her. Tear were streaming down her face. "De.. Demeter, I…will always…love…you".
" No…no, Calioto, you are all I have left, don’t leave me," Demeter pleaded. She carefully laid his head down on the ground. She stood up and pointed a paw at Exceon. "I will not rest until I see that everyone in your family is dead!,"
Just as spoke, Macavity walked in. "Father I…what’s going on?"
Exceon laughed. "This kitten says she is going to kill us," Exceon said calmly.
Macavity stared at the young cat, with tears running down her face. " You will regret the day you killed my family!," Demeter turned and rushed out of the room.
Decritso watched after her. "What have you done? You just killed the last of that young queens family!" Decritso cried.
" So?" Exceon said calmly. He walked over to Decritso and said, "I have no more need for your services." And with that, Exceon stuck him across his face leaving him unconsious.
"Take him away!" Exceon called to his guard who had been standing outside. Exceon turned and started walking away, towards the door.
"Come, Macavity,"he said to his son. Macavity, still absorbing what he had just saw, slowly turned and followed after his father.
