History of Sigma Alpha Iota, Eta Xi Chapter

Sigma Gamma Iota was founded in the Fall of 1986.  The idea behind the formation was to give the women of Central Michigan University a choice of music sororities/fraternities to join.  The purpose was to promote music in many different aspects.  The original group consisted of 22 members.

Sigma Gamma Iota became Sigma Alpha Iota on April 9, 1989.  There were 15 proud charter members of this international and professional music fraternity.

Sigma Alpha Iota is a music fraternity for women only.  Our purpose is to develop and encourage interest and participation in music as well as to promote social contact among those who love music.

Sigma Alpha Iota has over 90,000 initiated members and more than 300 college and alumnae chapters all over the United States.  Our members include students, teachers, performers, and composers of high merit.  We are all serious in our musical endeavors and strive for excellence.
