Annis Soldiers and Sailors

United States of America

Union soldiers before Petersburg, Virginia, 1864

The Annis "Boys in Blue" came off their farms in Vermont, New Hampshire, and other New England states, they came from the prairies of the Midwest and the Great Lakes states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Many times they left their wives and children behind in their haste to defend the Republic. But whether for the purpose of national union, or to free the slave, or in the case of the younger men, to find excitement and glory on the field of battle, they came by the dozens to "Father Abraham's" call. Not all of the men that answered the call performed their duties as was expected of them. Several of the following men deserted, some were arrested and court martialed when they were found, and some disappeared to avoid the punishment that they knew would eventually catch up to them.
The overwhelming majority of the Annis soldiers performed admirably in a war that was known for great hardships, enormous battle losses, attrition through disease and poor leadership.

William was transferred to Company "H", 20th Maine on June 5, 1865, when the 16th was disbanded at wars end. On July 16, 1865 he was mustered out as a Sergeant and given an Honorable Discharge at Washington DC.

William had originally enlisted in Co. "H", 1st Maine Cavalry on September 30, 1861, but was soon discharged (before muster) by the Regimental Surgeon. It has been written of Sgt. William Annis:

"Sgt. William E. Annis served with Co. H, 20th Maine Vol. Inf. During the Civil War of 1861-65, the 20th Maine was the Regiment who did the famous charge down Little Round Top, during the Battle of Gettysburg PA July 1st to 3rd 1863. On July 2nd 1863 when they had just about run out of ammo they fixed bayonets and with their Colonel, Joshua L. Chamberlain leading the way, they charged down the hill routing the Confederates who we trying to take it. Thus doing so the 20th Maine saved the day and Col. Chamberlain was later awarded the Medal of Honor and promoted to Brig. General in 1864. Later he became the Governor of Maine. Sgt.William E. Annis of Co. H took part in that Historical charge and was slightly wounded doing so."

As a researcher, I must add that the above story, probably related by William himself, is not accurate according to the dates of his service record. William was still with the 16th Maine Infantry during the summer of 1863. He was not transferred to the 20th Maine until near the end of the war. He removed to the west sometime after the Civil War and died October 10, 1921at Dayton, Lyon County, Nevada and is buried at Dayton Cemetery.
