Chapter Thirty-Three
Michigan...

I smiled, looking out the window of the van, watching as the highway flew by.

Beside me in the back seat of the van was Evie. She was staring out the window to her right. I was sure that in the bucket seat in front of me, Lynnie was asleep. I sighed inwardly. All the better. I didn’t feel like talking at that particular moment. Rather, remembering was what I felt like doing. Remembering the incident at the mall, remembering playing spoons, remembering Isaac kissing me. I smiled softly.

Another memory crept into my mind. One of writing a short note to Isaac, accompanied by my phone number and address. What had ever posessed me to write it was beyond me. Reguardless, I had done it, and what was done was done.

“ ‘Call me sometime’?” Eve asked softly. I turned to look at her as she slid toward me on the bench seat. “You think he will?”

I shrugged. “No,” I told her honestly.

Evie forced a small smile. “But you wish he would, don’t you?” she asked.

I thought about this for a minute. Finally, I smiled at her. “No. I already got my wish. I don’t think I’m allowed more than one.”

This time, Eve gave a real smile. “There’s more than one star in the sky, isn’t there?”

“Yeah,” I said. “. . . But . . .”

“Fine,” Evie said. “If you won’t wish, I’ll do it for you.”

I sighed. “Not necessary,” I informed her. “Like I said, I already got my wish.”

Eve’s brow knit. “What’s that?”

“My best friend,” I told her simply.

She smiled. “Forever,” she promised.
