Here are Pictures of Two 1000 Foot long Great Lakes Ships.
George A. Stinson at Marysville, MI. / James R. Barker at St. Clair, MI
There are over a dozen vessels near this size. The biggest on the great lakes is the Paul R. Tregurtha at 1013 feet long and 105 feet wide. The Soo Locks has the only lock in the world big enough to handle a vessel of this size. The Second American Lock also called the Poe Lock (Named for a General) is 1200 feet long and 110 feet wide. That means when a ship the size of the Tregurtha uses it there is only 2.5 feet of clearance on each side of the ship. There are plans to turn the Third and Fourth American Locks into one huge lock.
