The Unicorn
Leaving the path early one morn
While dew drops and
Sunrise still adorn
My country home
I pause for many an early morn sound
Of twittering birds
Searching a meal in the ground
And night creatures returning home
Further on my eyes grew wide
To see a wood of tremendous trees
In heaven's arms their branches hide
And silence reigns throughout
The center of this wood held a marvelous sight
A small, splendid horse
Bathed in ivory white
A single prong at the center of its head
Grazing, it was, on velvet green moss
It sensed my awed presence and
Flipped its head with a toss
And looked into my soul
Large pink eyes knew my greed
It stood as a dancer, still and intense
Would it carry me off, as was my need?
Muscular flanks quivered in anticipation
I stood there as in a trance
Afraid that if I made one
Wrong move or quick glance
The unicorn would vanish.
After five minutes or hours time
The magical pony turned away
And I imagined a golden chime
As it melted into the air
Sinking to the ground, I wept bitter tears
For I realized then that there was no more
Of fantasy come to life
And knew I had nothing to live for
Without the magic unicorn.
I climbed the wood's highest tree
And threw myself from it
But the unicorn leapt up to catch me
Before I hit the ground
It fell back down to earth
And deposited me sharply
I saw in it's eyes no sign of mirth
Only flashing, angry sparks
"Remember this, foolish one
To throw your life away
Because the fairy tale is done
Is an inexcusable act
Instead of mourning the end of rhymes
Go on to your next adventure
And make your own happy times
Through the magic of reality."
