Home, Home on the 'Ring...
Mika Hakkinen drove probably the best race of his F1 career yesterday. His start was nothing short of miraculous, bounding past Michael and DC to take the lead into the first corner. His performance in the rain was awe-inspiring as he drove his McLaren at ten-tenths through the changing conditions. Both pit stops were perfect, and the Mercedes engine and McLaren chassis performed flawlessly.
Too bad he didn't win.
Once again, RAINMASTER MICHAEL triumphed in the wet, with a brilliant overtaking maneuver early in the race to pass Mika, then basically disappearing out in front of the hapless Finn in a matter of a few laps. Still, Mika kept things interesting. And folks, that's what he's going to do for the rest of the season. Yes, Mika will keep things "interesting". Will he keep his title of world champion? Is the Pope Jewish? If it weren't for Hakkinen's flawless performance yesterday, the race would have been over when it started, and we all could have gone back to bed for a few extra hours of shut-eye.
On a side note, I got a kick out of the post-qualifying press conference, where David Coulthard admitted that he and his new wife haven't had sex in over three weeks. Perhaps that explains David's poor start yesterday, why he couldn't get it up when the lights went out...
