Won't Someone Think about the Poor, Helpless Children???
A study out this week found that most playgrounds in the United States have sub-standard safety measures to keep our most precious natural resources, our children, safe. Having a child of my own, I now take more than a casual interest in these types of issues, so I read the report. By the time I was done, all I could do was shake my head in disgust.
This study found that over half of the playgrounds they examined had sub-standard protection for children in case they fall down. You know what substandard means? It's not just concrete, or cement. No. It means these playgrounds had GRASS! Yep, good ol' grass is now considered unsafe for our kids! What a bunch of crap.
We have gotten to the point of doting over our children so much that it is no wonder when they grow up to be self-indulgent, self-centered cry-babies. Through this type of garbage we are teaching the young that it is EVERYONE'S OBLIGATION TO WATCH OUT FOR THEM BUT THEIR OWN. It's no wonder these kids grow up without a sense of responsibility. There are some animals in nature who are born (hatched) without *any* parental supervision, and have to learn the hard facts about life from day one. We have "evolved" to the point where we expect society to protect us from every scratch and every bruise. Are our children's lives better because they will have fewer broken bones than we did? I think not. A good scrape or bloody nose is a great teacher and a lesson learned.
A fall into a pile of soft sand is neither.
