Shakespear's Sister Close Up
With their new album, 'Hormonally Yours', they strike the mother lode.
Talk about planned parenthood: Six songs into recording Shakespear's Sister's second album, Hormonally Yours, Detroit-born guitarist Marcella Detroit, 35, announced she was pregnant. Inspired, Irish lyricist Siobhan Fahey, 34, the other half of the dreamy duo, decided the time was right for her and her husband, Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, too: "So I went for it -- and conceived." Happily, the two conceived six more Motwon and Beatles-inspired songs; one was the top 10 hit "Stay". Hugely popular in the U.K., the duo (whose name is from a Smiths lyric) is less known in the U.S., though Fahey sang with Bananarama and Detroit (nee Marcella Levy) cowrote and played guitar on Eric Clapton's 1978 hit "Lay Down Sally". The band just kicked off its first U.S. tour, after which the two are looking forward to some R&R -- Detroit in L.A. with husband Lance Aston and Maxwell, 1 and a half, and Fahey in France with Stewart, Sam, 4 and a half and Django, 1 and a half. The album's title reflects Detroit's discovery of a pregnancy- created hormone called relaxin "that does what it says, so I found I was able to take in more of life with less of a problem."
