Eerie Similarities
Siobhan B&WHarry B&W

Siobhan Fahey and Harry Groener

Starting with Siobhan's Angel of Death in "Stay" and Harry's Smiling Man in "Sleepwalkers".

1) Both Siobhan and Harry's characters are sinister, supernatural beings who may or may not represent death, and both invade quiet scenes -- he in a cathedral to terrorize a boy whose sleeping body is hooked up to machines, she in a space station/ hospital to terrorize a comatose man who is hooked up to machines.

2) They both make their entrances from bright lights, and both descend flights of steps (well, Siobhan's is a flight; Harry's is like, one or two). A basin of water is present in both scenes -- a baptismal bowl in the church, a sponge bath in the space station.

Siobhan as DeathHarry as..... brrr... :) 3) Both pull creepy facial parlor tricks -- she rolls her eyes back in her head, Exorcist- style; he grins till his face literally cracks in a Joker- like rictus.

4) Both Siobhan and Harry are singers in real life -- he's a little bit Broadway, she's a little bit rock 'n roll. (Now there's a duet idea!!)

Cake! 5) Both, weirdly, were born THE SAME DAY, September 10, making them Virgos! Siobhan's year is 1958, Harry's is 1951.

6) Long stretch: In the 'I Don't Care' video, Marcella Detroit wakes up screaming from NIGHTMARES, under a carved white stone wall that resembles one in the clinic in Sleepwalkers. The IDC video itself seems to be a dream that the whole band is having, since at the end they're dancing around in nightgowns and bathrobes. Siobhan gives a few creepy grins too!

7) In an unaired episode of Sleepwalkers titled 'Passed Perfection', Bruce Greenwood's lead doctor lies in a near-death coma, dreaming he's waiting at a train station. As a bright light spills down the tracks, he sees a figure coming toward him -- who turns out to be the Smiling Man. Bruce's character is resuscitated just in time. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions there!!

8) Oh, let's see those lovely horrific leers one more time. :)

9) Harry: Born in Germany.
Siobhan: Banned in Germany. ("Stay"'s video was considered blasphemous.)

10) Cat Reference: Siobhan (with Shakespear's Sister) wrote that magnum opus, Catwoman. Harry starred in the original Broadway run of that old staple, Cats.

11) Both Siobhan and Harry have recited the closing line from 'Sunset Boulevard' 'I'm ready for my close-up!' She did it in the Goodbye Cruel World video; he did it in a really weird episode of Buddy Faro.

I know most of you didn't see the TV series Sleepwalkers, since NBC unceremoniously dumped it after only 2 episodes in 1997. It was a very cool show in the X-Files vein, about a team of doctors helping troubled patients make sense of their nightmares. Harry Groener's Smiling Man only made one appearance in the episode 'Night Terrors', the last show before cancellation.
