Crime

crime -
An act committed or omitted in violation of law forbidding or commanding it, and for which punishment is imposed upon conviction.

Criminal Law

substantive criminal law -
Describes forbidden acts and the punishment to be inflicted when the law is broken.

procedural criminal law -
Describes how the state may go about arresting and convicting a suspected offender.

Case Law

case law -
Law created as a by-product of court decisions made in resolving unique disputes, as distinguished from statutory and constitutional law.

Modern Penal Code

model penal code -
In an effort to make laws more uniform, a Model Penal Code was proposed in 1962 by the American Law Institute (ALI). While not yet widely accepted, it some aspects have found their way into the criminal law of some states.
