When God Made Moms
"For my Mom"

When the good Lord was creating mothers,
he was in his sixth day of overtime,
when an angel appeared and said,
"You're doing a lot of fiddling around on
this one... And the Lord said,
"Have you seen the specifications on this one?..
She has to be completely washable
but not plastic, have 180 moveable parts
(all replaceable),
run on black coffee and leftovers,
have a lap that disappears when she stands up,
a kiss that can cure anything
a broken leg,a broken heart, and six pair of hands"

The angel shook her head slowly and said,
"Six pairs of hands...NO WAY!"
"It's not the hands causing the problems,"
said the Lord.
"It's the three pair of eyes that
mothers have." "That's on the standard
model?" asked the angel.
The Lord nodded.
"One pair that sees thru closed doors
when she asks, "what are you kids doing in there?"
when she already knows.
Another here in the back of her head
that sees what she shouldn't but,
what she needs to know and of course,
the ones here in front that
can look at a child when he goofs up
and say, "I understand and I love you,"
without so much as uttering a word."

"Lord" said the angel, touching his sleeve gently,
"rest for now."
"Tomorrow. . . I can." said the Lord.
"I'm so close to creating something close
to myself! Already I have one who
heals herself when she is sick,
can feed a family of six on
one pound of hamburger and
can get a nine year old to stand
under a shower."

The angel circled the model of the mother.
"She's too soft." she sighed.
"But tough!" said the Lord excitedly.
"You cannot imagine what the mother
can do or endure."
"Can she think?" asked the angel.
"Not only can she think but,
she can reason and compromise" said the Creator.

Finally the angel bent over and
ran her finger across the cheek.
"There's a leak," she pronounced.
"I told you, you were trying to put
too much into this model."
"It's not a leak," said the Lord.
"It's a tear."
"What's it for?" asked the angel...
"It's for joy, sadness, disappointment,
pain, loneliness and pride."
"You're a genius," said the angel...
The Lord looked somber,
"I didn't put it there."

~MOTHERS~
The young Mother set her foot on the path of life."is the way long?" she asked. And her guide said"yes, and the way is hard. But the end will be better than the beginning." But the young Mother was happy, and she would not believe that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children and gathered flowers for them along the way; and the sun shone on them and life was good, and the young Mother cried, "Nothing will ever be lovelier than this!"

Then night came, with storm and the path was dark and the children shook with fear and cold, and the Mother drew them close and covered them with her mantle, and the children said,"Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come," and Mother said, "This is better than the brightest of days, for I have taught my children courage."

And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children climed and grew So the children climbed, and when they had reached the top, they said"We could not have done it without you Mother!" And the Mother, as she lay down that night, looked up to the stars, and said,"This is better than the last, for my children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness."

And the next day came, strange clouds which darkened the earth-clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children looked and saw above the clouds to an "Everlasting Glory, and it guided them and brought them beyond the darkness. And that night the Mother said, 'This is the best day of all, for I have shown my children God!"And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years, and the Mother grew old, and she was tired and weary. But her children were tall and strong, and walked with courage. And when the way was rough, they lifted her and carried her; and at last they came to a hill, and beyond the hill they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide. And the Mother said,

"I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know that the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk alone, and their children after them."And the children said, "you will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates!"And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed after her.And they said,"We cannot see her, but she is with us still!A Mother like ours is more than a memory, She is and always will be a living presence."
