African bush elephants are the largest living terrestrial animals, being up to 3.96 m (13.0 ft) tall at the shoulders (a male, 1974); on average, males are 3.3 metres (10.8 ft) tall at the shoulders and 5.5 tonnes (12,130 lb) in weight, while females are much smaller at 2.8 metres (9.2 ft) tall and 3.7 tonnes (8,160 lb) in weight. The most characteristic features of African elephants are their very large ears, which they use to radiate excess heat, and their trunk, an extension of the upper lip and nose with two opposing extensions at its end, different from the Asian elephant, which only has one. The trunk is used for communication and handling objects and food. African elephants also have bigger tusks, large modified incisors that grow throughout an elephant's lifetime. They occur in both males and females and are used in fights and for marking, feeding, and digging.

Loxodonta africana; from Central and lower Africa.
The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the larger of the two species of African elephant. Both it and the African forest elephant have usually been classified as a single species, known simply as the African elephant, but recent evidence has seen the forest elephant classified as a distinct species. Some authorities still consider the currently available evidence as insufficient for splitting African elephants into two species.

Mammuthus columbi Dee Mammoth Skull - Fossil Replica
DEE was on old bull, dying between the age of 60 to 70. His left tusk was broken in life. It is believed he died of starvation and old age. His old worn teeth were less than one-quarter the size of healthy teeth, and these small teeth did not allow him to process enough food to remain healthy. DEE's skull was found in August 2009, about 275 feet (84 m) from the rest of his skeleton. There are several theories as to why the skull was separated from the body including that another mammoth may have moved it.
DEE's skeleton was collected and prepared by the Tate Museum between 2006 and 2009. It is among the largest and most complete of any Columbian mammoth. The original skeleton was stabilized, restored and mounted by Black Hill Institute in late 2009 and early 2010.

Columbian Mammoth Mammuthus columbi
Columbian Mammoths originated in Africa and entered North America. Standing up to 14 feet at the shoulder, they ranged from Alaska to Mexico. Mastodons and Elephants all belong to the group called Proboscidean. The twisted tusks identify this species. Mammoths had longer tusks than mastodons, a wider head, a sloping back, flat, chewing teeth, a trunk with two finger-like projections, and greater height.

The Columbian Mammoth (Mammuthus columbi), is an extinct species of elephant that inhabited North America. It is believed by some people to be the same species as its slightly larger cousin, Mammuthus imperator, because of their similarities in fossil location and size. It was one of the largest of the mammoth species and also one of the largest elephants to have ever lived, measuring 4 metres, or 13 feet, at the shoulder and weighing 10,000kg (9.8 tons).
Mammoth: Woolly Mammoth skull cast replica
Mammoths belong to the order Proboscidea, which also includes the American Mastodon and the African and Indian Elephant. The larger species of Mammoth became extinct about 10,000 years ago, while some of the smaller species existed until about 4,000 years ago. The specimen here is a Woolly Mammoth discovered in Alaska. The Woolly Mammoth is well-studied, as several well-preserved specimens have been found; it also appears in cave paintings. The Woolly Mammoth was similar in size and height to the Indian Elephant but had a distinctive slope to its back as a result of its relatively shorter hind legs. Its long thick black hair and underwool give rise to its name. Its tusks, which they may have used to dig through the snow to get to vegetation, measured up to 13 feet and are actually very long incisors that continued to grow throughout the Mammoth's life. Its teeth also appear to have been specially adapted to the frozen tundra, with a greater number of plates and a higher crown than the teeth of other Mammoths. Chosen for its quality and size, our specimen was probably a female. The smaller size makes it more manageable for teaching as well as exhibits.
We are grateful to the Babiarz Institute of Paleontological Studies for the opportunity to cast this individual.

With a pair of highly crowned teeth in each dentary, leaves and twigs formed much of their diet.

This skull belongs to a now extinct relative of elephants called
Platybelodon grangeri. Platybelodon (meaning "flat-tusk") lived during the Miocene Epoch. It may have gone extinct from overspecialization and inability to adapt to changing environmental conditions.
Please
email us or call (314) 556-0650 for more details.
The shape of the two lower teeth have led Platybelodon to be known as a "shovel tusker". It may have used it's teeth to strip bark from trees. This specimen was discovered in Gansu Province, China and measures 53" long. Late Miocene.

Stegodon is a genus of the extinct subfamily Stegodontinae of the order Proboscidea. It was assigned to the family Elephantidae (Abel, 1919), but has also been placed in Stegodontidae (R. L. Carroll, 1988).[1] Stegodonts lived in large parts of Asia during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs.
Stegodon skeleton
Stegodon are one of the largest of extinct elephants species (Proboscidean) with adults being 13 feet high at the shoulder, 26 feet long, not including 10 foot long nearly straight tusks. The genus Stegodon, (from Greek stegos: meaning roof, and odon: meaning tooth, referring to the step ridges on the molar tooth) has its origins in the late Miocene of Asia and belongs to the family Stegodontidae. There are 6 recognized species. Stegodons probably originated from Gomphothierium, and developed into a new direction with increase molar size and ridge-like dental features. The tusks were so close together that the trunk probably did not lye between them but instead draped over. Stegodon moved into Africa in the Pliocene and is regarded as the ancestor to present day elephants, as well as the extinct mammoths. The oldest finds of Stegodon are found in Asia. Stegodon diet consists of branches and foliage of trees.
