Choke 23 started in October, 1997. At first it was just Jeremy, Trav and JP, then within the next week, Nate learned to play Bass. By Halloween they played their first show. It was a house show in Traverse City and there were about 20 people there, including the band members. Then Jeremy Harris (from Vanadium) joined the band on second guitar. Everyone in the band agreed that Jeremy H. really improved the sound of the band. But unfortunately he only played about 5 or 6 shows with them. Lance then joined the band as the only horn player. He only played about 3 shows. And when the band went to the studio, his trombone was forgotten at home and he couldn't record with them. Choke 23 only played around 20 shows all together, a couple in Grand Rapids, a couple in Gaylord and a couple in Traverse City. Their biggest show was probably the Opera House show (Feb. 1998) with Square One, Bounty Hunters, Vanadium and Slow Children Playing. Halloween 1998 they played one of their last shows to a crowd of drunken aliens, ghosts and one big fat Cartman. The band broke up around January, 1999. All and all it was a short lived band, but in that time they managed to gather a big group of fans and one roadie-for-life named Willie Brown.
