HORTENSE KATHERINE WEDEKIND(Sophie Deschamps, Marie Heidelburg)
was born February 11 1855,in New York, New York. She married Julius Gorff on May 19, 1873 in Macon, Mississippi.
Fredrick Wedekind, Hortense's father was a tailor
for the Confederate Army in Mississsippi. During the time of the Civil War, coffee was practically non- existent in the south.
The southerners used a variety of things to make up
the loss. Burnt acorns, burnt yams, ground up corn cobs are just a few of the items that they used. Normally to this awful mess they would add a good pinch of chicory.
Everyone in the neighborhood always wanted the recipe that the Wedekinds used to make up their coffee mixture. They had not tasted anything as close to coffee as the Wedekinds "coffee" since the war started. It seems that their was a reason behind the coffee tasting like real coffee. If the south was hurting for coffee then the north was hurting for tobacco. Fredrick Wedekind would slip over the Mississippi line and trade with the Yankees, tobacco for coffee.
Hortense and Julius had three children born in Noxubee County, Mississippi before moving to Nashville, Tennessee where they had seven more children.
Hortense died August 10 1931. She had been a widow for quite some time when she died of burns and injuries caused by an exploding wood stove. Hortense always used kerosene to get her fire going in her wood stove.
Someone accidently set a can of gasoline, which was in
an old kerosene can beside Hortense's regular kerosene.
She picked up the wrong can. Her son Otto was there
and he rushed in and smothered Hortense in a quilt and
put out the fire in the kitchen. The explosion was so
great it drove pieces of the stove into the walls.
Hortense died three days later. She is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetary in Nashville, TN

FRANK WEDEKIND GORFF ( Hortense Wedekind, Sophie Deschamps, Marie Heidelburg) was born in Noxubee County, Mississippi in 1876. He married Clara Emilie Catharina Eckstein who was born in Birmingham, Alabama on April 18, 1879. Frank and Clara married June 10,1900 in Culman, Alabama.

Clara was a daughter of Flora L.A.W.Merkle and John Andrew Eckstein.

Frank worked for the railroad, loading freight in some of the new refrigeration cars that the railroad had built. In those days they leaked ammonia. By breathing in the ammonia laden air, he developed an infection in his lungs which turned into pneumonia. He died from it, in Powderly, Alabama at age thirty three.
Frank died November 13 1907. Clara passed away on April 10 1958. Both are buried in Elmwood Cemetary, Birmingham, Alabama.

Frank and Clara had four children. the family
Do to the death of their father, Frank Gorff, Clara had to split the children up.
Adele Gorff went to Nashville, TN. to live with Frank's parent's Julius and Hortense Gorff.
Ernst Gorff went to live with Clara's half-sister and her husband, Tillie and George Liebacher, at their Cullman Co. farm.
Rose Gorff stayed with her mother. Both she and Clara moved in with Clara's parents, John and Flora Eckstein.
The separated family, kept in contact with each other by writting lots of letters and postcards. Every summer, the children and Clara would gather together and spen the time between the Cullman Co. farm and the Eckstein house in Jefferson Co.

Adele graduated from the nursing school at Norwood Hospital in 1928. Before WW2 Bill was a third grade school teacher.
After he returned from the service, he became a security guard for the Kopper's Stove Company in Birmingham, Alabama.
Adele died in Birmingham, Alabama on June 5, 1980. Both Bill and Adele are buried at Elmwood Cemetary in Birmingham, Alabama Bill and Adele

He married Bertha Katherine Schwan, 24 February 1927 In Cullman, Alabama. Bertha was born 7 May 1908 In Cullman, AL. She died 27 January 1994 also in Cullman, AL. Her parents were Mary Appelman and Peter Schwann.
Ernst retired from Hays Aircraft.
He died of heart failure and is buried at East Point Presbyterian Cemetary in Cullman, Alabama along side of Bertha who died of altzheimers earlier.
