Think

The biggest game of the year
I personally invited you
I told you how important the game was to me,
to my team
I told you how much we wanted fans to show support
You have no idea what having fans -
someone cheering,
someone caring -
does for a team

The game is right down the street
You can walk there in ten minutes
And you have a car
I want you to come watch
I want to show you how hard we have been working

The game starts
We play
We play well
We score
We cheer
It echoes
Our parents hug us after we win

You are not there
I noticed
Again you have turned down my invitation for no reason
with no explanation
The game was early -
it started at seven:
you still had all night to party
It was Friday night,
for an hour and a half:
you still had all weekend to study
The game was free -
it cost nothing to get in:
your time was the only cost

It was worth a lot to me
You were not there

Their easiest game of the year
You don't know them,
just their names
You have no invitation from them
Do you have any idea what this game means to them,
what you mean to them?

You walk all the way across campus to get to the game
Or you pay dollars upon dollars to park your car
Or you have all your friends over with beer to watch on tv and party
Or you drive to the next state to be there
You give your money to the ticket-seller,
not thinking twice to pay to watch these strangers
You buy the shirts,
the banners,
the pom-poms,
the stickers
You take your place among thousands of others
You are a number in the attendance or the viewers
If you watch or not,
it matters not:
you are just one

The game starts after the players are announced
and the crowd quiets
The team scores quickly,
then again,
then again
There is no struggle,
but the celebration is great whenever the score grows
The game ends with a win
The team is showered with praises by the crowd of strangers

What does it mean to the team?
What do you mean to them?

You leave and celebrate all night as if it is your win,
and praise them
and smile with pride whenever you recall that you are student at the same school as they

So am I

Why couldn't you come to watch us?
Why did you turn down our invitation?
Why do you give them your attention and none to us,
though we are begging?
What does this say to me?
What am I supposed to think?
Why don't you care?

What is so different?
Is it more exciting when you don't know them,
when they play so far away,
when it costs so much,
when there is no one to see smile afterwards?

We have another game coming up soon
It would be wonderful if you could come
