VALVE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

About this time you may be thinking that the cold adjustment should be good enough..well, it's not. The lifters in the Super Duty are a limited travel type and it is VERY important that you do the final adjustment in order to get the correct push rod to lifter setting. This would be a good time to re-install the fan and put the valve cover bolts into their holes.(The engine will actually draw vacuum through the valve cover bolt holes causing it to idle rough!) You are now at the point I warned you about earlier, the oil is going to fly creating a big mess in no time at all, so take precautions. Once you start the engine to do the final setting, you must work quickly, so KNOW what you are going to do and have all your tools ready.

ALRIGHT....fire that Bad Boy up and listen closely to the rockers. Any that you hear clattering should be tightened until the noise JUST disappears. Now go right down the line loosening each nut until the rocker begins to clatter, then tighten it back up until the noise is just gone. This process will set the pushrod just INTO the top of the lifter travel which assures full valve lift and maximum power. Now, depending on the type of locks you have, lock the rocker nuts in position and shut the engine down. This will complete one head and since you will have no reason to go back to it, you should go ahead and button it up. As the engine cools down, get prepared to do the other head. It is simply a matter of repeating all the above steps once more.
