  Richard Gilliam Dunlap

At 19 years of age he commanded a company of volunteers under Jackson at Mobile and Pensacola. A captain of volunteers in the war against the Florida Indians. A Brigadier General of volunteers called to meet the extended difficulties on the Mexican frontier. Member of the legislature of 1831 and 1833 from Knox Co. He was the author of the statute under which a system of public schools was first established in Tennessee. Member of the cabinet of President Lamar of Texas. Minister from that republic to the United States. He died on his return from that mission before reaching the meridian of his life or of his usefulness.
