A Shoshone guide they called Old Toby, and his son, camped with the
Corps for a couple of nights when they had very little food. He had
warned Lewis and Clark
that farther up in the mountains game would be hard to find. So while
some people tried to fix some of the clothing others would go hunting.
Most likely while they did that Sacagawea
had sewing and laundry to do for her family. As the Corps went
up the mountain they found that Old Toby was right. The game was scarce.
Old Toby led the party astray several difficult miles before getting them
on the right trail again.
