Seaman was a big black Newfoundland dog that belonged to Lewis.
Several members of Chinooks tried to "dognap" Seaman. Helpful Native
Americans informed the Corps that others had taken the dog to a nearby
village. Lewis sent three of his men to
go and get the dog and to shoot if necessary. Soon Seaman was back
with the Corps. The chief of the "villains"- as Lewis called them--
apologized and said that they did not want to do harm to the Corps.
The dog had guarded the Corps against grizzlies.
