Walking across my driveway, daydreaming as I always do
I found a copper penny, dated 1982
I picked it up and rubbed it off
For years of dirt had at last made it lose its' shine
I almost tossed it back again to the ground where it once laid
Then I remembered that was the date in which we first got engaged
Was this a sign of what has been and what has become of us
For the shine that we once had has long since turned to dust
I studied it, and noticed that the coin was still intact
With some tender loving care, perhaps it was'nt too late to make it shine in fact
I brought it in the house and got some cleaner too
I spent an hour of loving care working till I was through
Its luster that I had thought was gone began to come anew
I remember back when we first wed how our love was oh so true
I wonder if it's too late, we can spit and polish the rough parts of our life that we once knew
Perhaps then too we can shine again like a penny from 1982
