BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST TRIP REPORT

Jon, Kent, Aaron, and I decided to stay in Deadwood after we went to see Mount Rushmore. After a walk through Mount Moriah (where Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried), we headed towards town for a bite to eat. The next morning we drove to the Spearfish canyon area to begin a short day hike. (We even passed an area where they filmed Dances With Wolves). The hike started out along a small river and plenty of trees. We hiked for a while in the hills, among the rock cliffs, and the trees. Then we came upon snow. This area had not melted yet, since it was early May and in the mountains. We followed the trail for a while, but it became difficult because the snow was up to mid thigh on all of us. After we became lost and it clouded over, we decided to go north, where we knew we would find the dirt road we drove in on. After a while we finally found the road and hiked down it for a 1/2 mile until we found our car and the trail again. We did not know that there would be that much snow, but there was. We were going to camp at that spot but it began to rain and it looked like it was going to get worse. Since we had done most of what we had wanted we decided to get started back home. It was a good thing too because a storm came in and had 40-50 mph winds and plenty of rain.
