BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST TRIP REPORT

Jon and I drove over to the Mount Rushmore area and we noticed it was beginning to snow. It was raining when we left Rapid City, but then we heard on the radio that anything above 5,000 ft. was getting snow. We ended up camping at a National Forest campsite somewhere southeast of Hill City, near Harney Peak. We set up our tent in the snow and begin to look for firewood. After a failed attempt to find wood at a KOA nearby, we finally found some on the underside of a fallen tree. Anything that had been exposed was wet except the underside of a log I found. I made several trips for wood while Jon got the fire started. The fire kept us warm for a while until we decided to go to bed. The snow tapered off during the night. It had been the type of snow that was somewhat wet and sticky because it was only 32 degrees out.

The next morning we woke up and it was party sunny and beautiful. The snow had created a nice coating to the hills and it was awesome. After a bite to eat in Hill City, we headed towards Sylvan Lake. Once we arrived at the lake we began the hike up to Harney Peak. It had snow about 3 inches but we did not let that stop us. The scenery was beautiful and the weather was great. It was about 35 degrees and sunny so we wore a sweatshirt and a light jacket. We made it to the top of Harney Peak in 1 hour and 45 minutes. The view from this old fire lookout tower was awesome. We could see the backside of Mount Rushmore and several other states. There were cool cloud formations and interesting views with the snow coating everything in sight. We hiked back down to the car and drove to the Badlands.
