GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK TRIP REPORT

We began our hike near Cades Cove and our objective was to come out near Rainbow Falls where our other car was. We hiked along a large river and had to cross it a couple times but there were plenty of rocks so it was fairly easy. We had hiked in several miles before we decided to make camp for the day. We were right next to the river, which at this point was only several feet across. We made dinner and put our food in a bear sack and hung it from a tree. We slept good that night while the creek babbled on. The next morning we woke up and it had rained. We gathered our things and began to hike towards Mt. LeConte, where we would spend the next night. As we hiked up the mountain it continued to rain and it was somewhat miserable. We were fairly wet by now, but the views were still pretty good. As we climbed higher we could see the source of this river we were following. It was neat in its own way.

The rain finally stopped during the early afternoon hours. By this time we were beat. We made it to an overlook and we could see the hills all around us. It was great. We continued to hike up the mountain until we came to a split in the trail. Upon reviewing the map and what the weather was going to be, we decided to take the other trail which would lead us back to the car. We finally made it back to the car around six o'clock. We drove into the town of Gatlinburg, got a hotel, a steak dinner, and went swimming because we could hardly walk due to the blisters. We had hiked up and down a 5,500 ft. mountain through rough terrain and we were tired. Since the weather did not clear up the next day we decided to drive back home.
