After Las Vegas
Summer 1999

This scene takes place in Marlena's apartment where Mike has found Carrie. This is the day after Austin found Mike and Carrie together.

Mike: I'm sorry Austin found out before you had a chance to tell him...Carrie, do you think I want to sneak around? You are the woman I love. Whenever I think about my future... Whenever I allow myself to believe that I will finally be happy, you're there with me. We belong together...

Mike: No matter what you say, I know that you feel the same way. You showed me your true feelings last night.

Carrie turns at just stares at Mike.

Mike: You know what I remember most about last night? What I can't stop thinking about?
Carrie: Don't, Mike.
Mike: ...was you. It was you looking into my eyes so deep that I thought I would get lost and maybe never come out again. Thte way you touched me like you've been waiting your whole life to do it.
Carrie: Please, don't.
Mike: It was...it was everything I've ever needed. Please tell me you feel the same way.

Carrie pauses slightly.

Carrie: I felt loved and safe...like I had come home.
Mike: You were...

Mike: We wanted to be together for such a long time, but we held back for Austin's sake and for Sami's sake and out of respect for your marriage and for your vows and our positions at the hospital and our concern about our families and friends, and what the hell - why don't we throw global warming while we're at it?! We were thinking about everything and everyone but ourselves. But last night, it was just us. It was finally just us and the feelings that we've fought for so long. It was love, and it was true and as deep as it gets.
Mike and Carrie are talking in the park after Will's custody hearing.

Mike: What about you? What about your feelings?
Carrie: I lost my chance to be happy. I threw that away.
Mike: Well, guess what? - you didn't throw it far enough because I caught it. I did. It's right here, waiting for you. Just one thing - I come with the package.

In the hospital after Sami's near-execution...Austin is at Sami's bedside, holding her hand. Carrie and Mike are standing off to the side.

Mike: It's so obvious how much Sami loves Austin. I don't think she ever stopped.
Carrie: I don't either. But I'm starting to wonder if Austin has strong feelings for Sami now.

Mike turns to Carrie.

Mike: Well, maybe that's the way it's supposed to be. Austin with Sami, and you with me.

Carrie look up at him with a faint smile on her lips.

Mike and Carrie have left Austin and Sami behind and they are walking through the hospital. Carrie is frustrated, angry, and sad.

Mike: Can I help?
Carrie: No, I better get a paper and start looking for a new place.

She turns to walk away until Mike stops her.

Mike: Then I'll go with you.
Carrie: No, I think you should stay here.
Mike: Well, I really think I should be there. I mean, I'm not going to need a lot of space, but I gotta have a spot for my desk and computer. Oh, and closets...closets - my suits take up a lot of room.

Carrie just stares at him.

Mike: I'm asking you to live with me.

Carrie takes Mike by the arm and leads him over to a corner.

Carrie: Mike, we can't move in together.
Mike: Well, I know we said we would be discreet. But things have changed, you and Austin are separated now.
Carrie: There's nothing on paper. I just moved my stuff out.
Mike: Well, you're not planning on moving back in, are you?
Carrie: Well, that's wasn't my point, Mike. We agreed to keep this quiet.
Mike: I know we did, but I don't think we can anymore. I love you. I love you so much I want to take out an ad in the paper and tell the whole world.
Carrie: Mike, I have to think of my family. The last thing they need is another scandal.
Mike: You should think about waking up together every morning. Going to bed together every night. And if you want to get real romantic, we can do the dishes, you know. I'll wash, you dry. Carrie, we'd be so happy.
Carrie: We can't, Mike. You are the Chief of Staff. We have your reputation to think of.

Mike just looks at Carrie.

This scene is after Ali's lawsuit was settled, and Mike surprised Carrie with flowers at her apartment.

Carrie: I think I finally understand what love is all about, too. Thanks to that marriage counselor.
Mike: So, you and Austin?
Carrie: No, no...Not Austin. When he stormed out of our last session, he made it very clear that he wouldn't go back.
Mike: You never did tell me why he did that.
Carrie: Because when the counselor asked me if I could stop loving you, I had to give an honest answer...And I said no.

Mike looks at Carrie lovingly and moves toward her.

Mike: Really?

He leans in and their lips meet tenderly.

Mike: I can't believe I have you in my arms and I am going to say this...But we need to talk.
Carrie: About what?
You said Austin left the counseling session when you told him that you couldn't stop loving me.
Carrie: That's right.
Well, the obvious question is, can you stop loving Austin?

Carrie looks at Mike for a few seconds until there is a knock at the door.

Carrie: That has got to be reporters. Maybe you should duck out of site, Mike.
Mike: No, no...Um, that's a little surprise that I arranged.

Mike opens the door to find a man with a cart full of food for Carrie. He wheels it in.

Carrie: What is this?
Mike: I took the liberty of ordering dinner for the lady.

She smiles at him tenderly.

Mike: So, you haven't really answered my question.

Mike leans in to kiss her, but decides not to - just to tease her.

Carrie: Austin stopped loving me.
Mike: That's wasn't my question.

He gives in and kisses her gently.

Mike: I asked if you could stop loving Austin.

Carrie stares at Mike for a few seconds, but then looks down.

Carrie: There will always be a part of me that will love him because of what we went through to be together.
Mike: Okay, now what about your love for me?
Carrie: Ali really tested it. It only proved that my love for you is real and I want more than anything, I mean if you still want me.
Mike: Of course I want you.

Mike kisses Carrie with pure elation and joy. It rivals the kisses and looks from Green Mountain Lodge when Carrie told Mike that she loved him even then.

Mike: I think we need to celebrate. Would you like some champagne?
Carrie: Champagne? You feel like celebrating after that settlement Ali got?
Mike: Are you kidding me? You love me. You love me! I mean, we're the winners here...Ali failed in all her psychotic attempts to split us up. You love me.
Carrie: (nodding) I guess that astrologer in Vegas was right. Our love is in the stars.

They clink glasses, smiling.

Mike and Carrie: Together Forever
