Mike's Conversation With His Grandmother
November 18, 1999

Mike has just arrived at his Grandma Horton's house where she is making donuts.

Alice: What have you been doing all morning?
Mike: Spending time with family, but I saved my favorite girl for last. I've come to say goodbye.
Alice: Goodbye? Where are you going?
Mike: Back to Israel. But this time, I'm taking Carrie with me.
Alice: (with a look of delight) Oh! You've settled everything?
Mike: Well, not exactly. Now Carrie needs some time to find herself. So, if she can do that, hopefully then we can find our way back together again.
Alice: That's the most utter nonsense I've ever heard!

Alice: Carrie is going to Israel because she can't face the future without you.
Mike: Grandma, I want to be with Carrie desperately, but I can't make her do that if she's not ready. And I promised her I wouldn't push.
Alice: Well, some promises are made to be broken.
Mike: Maybe so, but Carrie is reluctant to be with me right now.
Alice: Just never mind her reluctance. Take her by the hand, head for the nearest church, and take her to the altar.

Mike just looks at his grandmother in disbelief.

Mike: Grandma, the last thing Carrie needs right now is me forcing her to do anything. She's still reeling from everything that we've been through: betraying Austin and having our own affair flaunted all over Salem by Ali, and then my leaving! I mean, she needs time to heal. She needs time to re-evaluate.
Alice: Darling, that's no point to try to re-evaluate the obvious. And it's perfectly obvious to me, and it should be to both of you - you're in love and you should be together. So, what you need to do is make Carrie realize that. Trust me. All of Carrie's confusion and her doubt will disappear when you go and say to her, 'Carrie, will you marry me?'
Mike: I don't think I an do that, Grandma.

Alice just looks at her grandson.

Mike: I cannot presume to psychoanalyze Carrie, Grandma. Listen, she's not ready to commit...at least, she's not ready to make a commitment to me. And I can't just walk up to her and say, 'Let's get married!'
Alice: Why not? If it's the right thing, go for it Michael! Court her, woo her...
Mike: (thinking for a moment) Court her?
Alice: Have I ever steered you wrong?
Mike: Okay...Okay, I'll go for it!
Alice: Oh, that's my boy!
Mike: (hugging Alice tightly) Thank you...thank you! I love you so much.
Alice: And I love you so much!
The next day...Carrie hears a knock at her door, and opens it to find Mike holding a huge bouquet of flowers. She smiles coyly.

Carrie: I think you have the wrong apartment, buddy!
Mike: No...no - Carrie Brady still lives here, doesn't she?
Carrie: For the time being.

Mike hands her the flowers.

Carrie: Thank you - they're beautiful.
Mike: Well, I hear you're into gardening. They don't hold a candle to you.
Carrie: Come in.
Mike: Thanks.
Carrie: If you can find your way through this mess here.
Mike: I know how you feel.
Carrie: Yeah, if I had known you were coming, I would have cleared a path for you.
Mike: Yeah, then I would have spoiled the surprise - I like surprising you. In fact, I've got a couple other surprises line up too.
Carrie: I think I know one of them. Lois called me and said they offered you your job back.
Mike: Wow...Word travels fast.
Carrie: Well, don't keep me in suspense. Are you going to take it?
Mike: That depends.
