Jim's Photo Page - Saving Faded Photographs

One of the great things you can do with digital photography is to restore some faded photographs. A friend brought me the faded, greenish photograph below (left) and asked if I could fix it. I went to work with Adobe Photoshop 4.0 LE, a program that comes free with several printers and scanners.

Roger: Before and After

First I went to HUE/SATURATION. I moved the HUE slider bar until the color looked more natural. Then I moved the SATURATION slider to bring up the color a bit. This restored a more normal looking skin tone. The tux was still too light and off color from the rest of the picture. I SELECTED just the tux and adjusted the HUE to change the tux color to black, and then I darkened the tux. Then I took the DODGE/BURN tool and used DODGE to lighten the outside edges of the photo to match the rest. The result is on the right. Needless to say, my friend was very pleased to have the photo of her son returned to a much more normal color.
