Jim's Photo Page - Tip: Scanning 3D Objects

An Eldar Miniature

Flatbed scanners are obviously for scanning flat objects. Most people don't think of using them for scanning three dimensional objects. My son needed a quick record of some miniatures he had painted. Photographing them was certainly an option, but we elected to scan them and save them to disk.

The figure above is 2 1/2 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches wide at the shoulders. We layed it on its side on the scanner, place a white board over it resting on four empty film cannisters. The white board was far enough away that it registered as a neutral gray. Other colors could have been used.

Depth of field is limited, but the effect can sometimes be pleasing. The shoulder and arm that were against the glass are sharp. The head is a little less sharp and the far arm and leg are soft.

Flatbeds have been used to scan flowers, necklaces, art objects, and even people. If you have a flatbed scanner, what intersting objects do you have to scan?
