Just to be your-self would be like heaven, right?
One afternoon, in the brightly lit streets of New York City, two people started an argument. The blonde women stood tall and announced to the man standing next to her, “I build houses for a living.” She was waiting for him to say she wasn’t fit to build anything that involves strength and endurance. The man surprised her by saying clear as daylight, “I am a interior designer. I live for the walls of color.” This show of revelation was a little bit shocking to each. There were different identities in the opposite sex that they didn’t realize? They had the potential to be who-ever they wanted to be? Wow. What a change!
Most of society expects men to act like men, and women to act like women. To conform, people must present themselves in a certain way. Women are considered to be thoughtful, caring, compassionate and loyal. “Valorie, you look absolutely marvelous today,” Magenta commented sincerely. Men are supposed to be strong, sports obsessed, and not very talkative. “Hey. Heard about the Cubs lately?” asked Todd bluntly.
To society, if one of the genders is at all different from what they are supposed to be, then they are labeled certain names. I believe that that part of society should not exist anymore. Too many people often hide their true feelings and or true hobbies from the same sex. Not too many guys in the world would willingly admit that they have a passion for writing or designing a bedroom as an interior designer. “Hey Eliza, I was wondering, what would you say if I told you I was an over emotional person? That I cried at the worst possible times? Would you still be my girlfriend?” Whereas not many females will say that they are into cars that have power. “I don’t know how to let you down, but I have a secret love for racing soulfully down the tracks on a motorcycle. Do you handle think I could handle that? Well, you should.” In this instance, however, it was voiced, but done so in an unusual fashion. “Dirty. I have to get dirty? He never gets dirty. Why?” Society often reprimands the daintiness of the man and hates to see the woman get dirty or do a man’s job. This point of view is inaccurate, demeaning and should no longer be tolerated.
As a society, we need to start realizing that everyone has their own value of how they want to live and it needs to be respected even if it doesn’t fit the mold of society. There needs to be no more stereotyping and we need to accept people for who they are, not what they are. We are not a species of another kind. We are all human. “Think we can make it through the night?” We should know that everyone has there own interests.
In the article,“Why Can’t a Woman be more like a Man, and Vice Versa,” Amy Bloom uses the approach of saying that our society is better off than we were many years ago, so why should we complain so much. I agree with her to the point that we are better off now than when our ancestors were here. After all, women have more rights to find places to work where men always seemed to be the leading man. We are trying to be a more equal society. There are more opportunities for everyone. However, there are still some people in society who don’t like women acting like men and vice versa. They want the woman to do womanly things and the men to do manly things. They don’t want either of them to cross over to the other side. If a male were to cry at all, then he would look feminine. If a female aggressively tore into a football game then she would look masculine. People often snub their noses to those kinds of people, for they are considered weird because they aren’t acting like they should.
For instance, building houses is highly considered to be a man’s job to most of society. This is hard strenuous work and you need strength to do this type of work. Women are considered to be weak and unfit for this job. You see very few women in the construction business. Women are still held back when it comes to pay. Men still earn more money than women, but women are beginning to be a little more respected for what they accomplish. Men are finally seeing that women should still get the same kind of chance to do the same thing as them, even if it takes longer to achieve their own success.
To Amy, there is still a line that women can’t seem to cross. Where acceptable has ended and dangerous begins is the line waiting to be crossed. Women who are in the public eye, for the most part still have to wear nail polish, makeup, high heels and have to look fabulous at all times. To some particular people, this could be rather damaging since they might not be suited for wearing high heels or makeup because of what they do. She also says that if you don’t want to dress up all the time, you don’t have to. You should just know that you won’t get signed to do a lot of endorsements. I don’t believe it should be like that. Women should be able to just be themselves, no matter what. We should dress how we feel.
Within the essay, Amy uses nature as a reference to sweet voices that we should listen to. There are occasions where mistakes have been made. She is saying that to be masculine or feminine in this world isn’t just two notes in Nature. It is the vastness of the voices in the wind, the magnificent brushes of sand on the feet, the tilt of the spoon when delved deeply within chocolate ice cream. Nature in us is to follow what others have stowed upon us. We should listen to our elders. What they have displayed we should follow. To most of society, we abide by the guidelines we have been given. This essay tries to say that we should not have to follow in our ancestors’ footsteps. That we all have rights to be equal and that we should all be able to have the same kind of interests if that is our desire.People think that if they don’t fit the normal mode of society, then they are failures at life. The thing is that no one is normal. Everyone hides their true self when forced to look like one of their own. People don’t have a clique haven for nothing. They do it to feel like they belong, even if it means avoiding their true self. They mold themselves to be accepted. Society doesn’t like change. So they amend for it by staying all the same. Each gender having their own types of interests laid out for them. That type of portrayal shouldn’t exist anymore. We should be able to cross the line of where acceptable ends and dangerous begins. If men get the chance to have adventure, then women should be perfectly able to have adventure too.
