"Kienan"
Kienan was going to be my next show hopeful. I had been trying to breed a show worthy boy for several litters to no avail. Either the bites were off, they were too big or too little, or lacking in important male equipment. Everything seemed to be going well until I took him to the 2014 National and had his dentition evaluated at the health clinic. I knew we were in trouble when Julie said, "Well, they are all there, but I've never seen this before." My stomach dropped. The consensus was that Kienan has a posterior cross bite, apparently rare in shelties, though known to occur in collies. Instead of the top molars overlapping the lower molars, they are clashing. I guess I never looked that far back in his mouth, my greater concern was missing premolars or lance canines. Kienan has no problem eating, but in a worse case scenario it could interfere with the dog's ability to chew properly. I was heartbroken, this enthusiastic little fellow had caught my heart. I cried for 24 hours, then decided he was too cool a puppy to place. He's neutered and we play at rally. He really needs a better handler though:-)
