Chapter 21:
When he got to 4B, the studio was practically empty. There were two people up in the control room, fiddling with dials. The band was non-existent, with the exception of one young man absently playing the baby grand that had been placed in the sound stage. To one in the control room he asked, "Where's the rest of the band?"

"We didn't have all the equipment set up, so they're taking a break," the girl said. Taylor nodded, and peered through the glass down at the young man who seemed to be very wrapped up in his music. The notes were familiar, and then suddenly he began to sing, his golden voice filling up everything. The crewmembers trying to set up stopped to listen.

Slow down you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart tell me why
Are you still so afraid?

Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You better cool it off before you burn it out
You got so much to do and only so many hours in a day

But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you can just get it old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through
When will you realize…
Vienna waits for you

Slow down you're doing fine
You can't be everything you want to be before your time
Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight
Too bad but it's the life you lead
You're so ahead of yourself
That you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you're wrong
You know you can't always see when you're right

You got your passion you got your pride
But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on but don't imagine they'll all come true
When will you realize...
Vienna waits for you

Slow down you crazy child
Take the phone off the hook
And disappear for a while
It's alright you can afford to lose a day or two
When will you realize...
Vienna waits for you

You know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you can just get it old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through
Why don't you realize...
Vienna waits for you
When will you realize...
Vienna waits for you

As the last note fell away, Taylor found his voice. He leaned forward into the mic that filtered down into the soundstage below. "Excuse me, but that was a wonderful job. Where did you hear that song?"

The young man looked up, startled. He shook his dark blond hair out of his eyes, and peered up at the glass trying to see who was talking to him. "My mom likes it a lot. She played it all the time. I just picked up on it. Why?"

"It just reminded me a lot of some things that happened to me in the past," Taylor said. "Where's the others?"

The young man looked around and shrugged. "Out."

"Do you mind coming out here for a while. Maybe we could go get coffee or soda…"

The young man shrugged again and took off his headset. He then headed to a door, and after a moment or two, appeared in the control room with Taylor. Taylor looked up at the boy, who was about 18. He was tall and looked a bit shaggy. His eyes met Taylor's immediately.

"You must be Mr. Hanson," he said, sticking out his hand. "I'm the guitarist from… "You're the guitarist?" Taylor asked, standing up and shaking his hand. He found it much easier now to look the young man in the eye. "Not the pianist?"

"No," the young man replied. "Why?"

"You're very good," Taylor said.

The young man shrugged. "I'm limited in my abilities. I'm self-taught, so…"

"Wow," Taylor said. "That's amazing."

"Thanks. Are we getting those sodas?"

"Oh, yeah," Taylor said.
