NMGMS Minutes for December 2002 by Rena Everett, Secretary

Yuletide partying includes food, toys, and gifts

After members enjoyed a delicious potluck dinner, President Floy Hawkins called the monthly meeting of the North Mississippi Gem and Mineral Society to order at 1:10 p.m. on December 14, 20002 at the Lee County Library in Tupelo. There were 12 members present and no guests.

The following members agreed to serve on the nominating committee for next year’s officers: Rena Everett, Gene Foshee, Jessie Frye, and retiring president Floy Hawkins. They will meet at the close of this meeting to discuss possible candidates and will submit a slate of officers next month. Before the discussion was over, Mary Reed agreed to serve the second year of her vice-presidential term; so the new officers needed are president, secretary, and treasurer. Since the bank account is in Starkville, we will hopefully have a treasurer-nominee from there.

Floy suggested that we make a donation to the Lee County Library Fund since we have been meeting there so frequently. It was moved, seconded and approved unanimously that we donate $50 to this fund. The treasurer will be notified.

Nikki Kenney called Floy to report that the Christian Church in Tupelo has the same rule as the library about not being able to reserve a permanent meeting place there. We have the library through May and will be looking for a permanent home in the meantime.

Floy suggested that we have workshops and field trips interspersed with the programs at our club meetings. Rena Everett will get in touch with Ron Brister of the Pink Palace to see if we can have a field trip there in May. Mary Reed will contact John Wright to see if he will give us a program soon.

Gene Foshee asked about our progress toward having a show. We are still working in that direction, but we need to have more members and more exposure before we can begin any serious negotiations with dealers, etc.

Sandy Grych, editor of The Nugget, reported on her awards from the SFMS for 200 and told us about articles and newsletters sent in for the SFMS 2001 Bulletin Editors’ Contest.

Nancy Roberts asked about our logo. The winning logo was *8, the round one. Mary Reed knows a lady who does embroidery and will ask her about prices for making us badges. Floy has already made arrangements for plastic name badges for club members.

There was a discussion about whether we will have one month or two months off during the summer, and the consensus was that we should have one month off, that month being July.

The January meeting will be at the Lee County Library in Tupelo on January 18, 2003. The program will be a video on dinosaurs.

George and Rena Everett will take the toys that were brought by members to the Christmas Store, an interdenominational “Store” where parents can choose Christmas toys for underprivileged children in Oxford.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:45 so that members could participate in the silent auction and present exchange.

Respectfully submitted,

Rena Everett, Secretary
