NMGMS August Minutes by Rena Everett, Secretary
Annual Rockhound Petrified Forest Picnic featured contests, games, food, and winnders
The monthly meeting of the North Mississippi Gem and Mineral Society was held on Sat., Aug. 24, 2002 at the Petrified Forest in Flora, Miss. Seven members of the North Mississippi club enjoyed the hospitality of the Mississippi Gem and Mineral Society at their annual picnic.
There were contests, games and food in abundance. North Mississippi members fared very well in the contests. Bill Hawkins won first place in the "Best Find Since Last August" contest. George Everett won first place in the" name the Specimen" contest. He also won second place in a games, similar to "Concentration", which was sponsored by our club.
President Floy Hawkins had brought the crinoid "soup" that we were raffling off, and offered members of the Jackson club a chance to buy tickets. At the end of the picnic, the drawing was held, and Janie Hand of the Jackson club was the winner. (Editor's note from Pres. Floy: The fossil "soup" specimen brought a total of $27.50.)
We held a short business meeting at the end of the picnic in order for George and Rena Everett to propose an addition to the Southeast Federation constitution and by-laws. They are the Youth Resources chairs for the Federation, and there needed to be an addendum made to their job description. A member club or the Executive Board must sponsor all addenda in order to submitted at the annual meeting. It was proposed, moved, seconded, and approved unanimously that the following change be made in the SFMS Constitution:
The following be included as 2D under Article IX, Section 6, 0 in the constitution and that the present 2d become 2e:
d. Administering Federation scholarships for juniors and their parents, and administering other monies designated for junior activities.
There was also discussion of the best time for a meeting to discuss plans for Youth Day, to be held in conjunction with our November meeting. The business meeting was then adjourned so that members could walk the trail at the Forest and shop at the Gift Shop.
Respectfully submitted,
Rena Everett, Secretary

Two eligible for Stamp Scholarships
The Southeast Federation Stamp Chairman said that the NMGMS contributions to their program were such that two members of the NMGMS will be eligible for the 2003 scholarship drawing. The two names must be presented to him no later than Oct. 1, 2002.
Consequently, we have to select the names at our September meeting. The names of members in good standing will be put into the "hat" for the drawing. If you are NOT interested, please notify Floy immediately.

Attention Wire Wrappers!
The time is now! It's time to get your entries ready for the wire wrapping competition at the State Fair. The rules and the categories are the same as last year:
The State Fair folks define wire wrapping as jewelry formed from sterling silver or 14-carat gold-filled wire, using no solder, which may incorporate gems, minerals, decorative rocks or fossils by framing those items with the wire.
There are four categories. (The may have added a fifth, category this year for pins.) The categories are pendants, bracelets, rings, and miscellaneous. A wire wrapper may have one entry in each category, for a total of four entries altogether.
Entries will be judged by a set of master criteria. They will not be judged against each other. Only the number of entries limits the number of blue ribbons (and $10.00 cash prizes) that can be given.
Entries should be delivered to Evelyn Donald at the Trade Mart at the State Fairgrounds on Sept. 27 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The judging will be done on Sept. 28 and the Fair starts on Oct. 2.
After the Fair, you will be able to pick up your entries and your ribbons. The prize money will arrive later. Evelyn will tell you exactly when to pick up your entries. The security in the exhibit building is good. We have never had a problem with that.
Please enter lots of pieces! We need to show the world what we do.
If you have any questions, you can call George or Rena Everett at (662) 234-8561
Note from Rena Everett
I will be going to Jackson to take George's entries to the State Fair wire wrapping competition on Sept. 27. I will be glad to take the entries of any of our members who want to participate. I know that we have several wire wrappers in our club, and this would be a great way to show the world one of the things that gem and mineral club members can do.
If you will bring your entries to me at the September meeting, I will take them to Jackson, enter them in the competition, pick them up when the fair is over, and return them to you at the October meeting.
If you are not going to be at the September meeting, you can mail your entries to me at 69 Jeff Street, Oxford, MS 38655.
Entries from our club really enhanced the exhibit of wire wrapping entries at the fair last year. Let's do at least as well this time.
