This has been the most musical episode since Season 2, with my favorite jean commercial that featured the buxom blond in the tight jeans singing, "Every- day is like SURVIVOR…, When I'm in love with you…, Every date's like Tribal Council…, Wonderin' if I'll get the boot...". But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Day One and we watch as Captain Jeff Probst steers his luxury cruiser thru the waterways of the Palau Islands in the SW Pacific. Cut next to a lifeboat containing our 20 contestants this season. Jeff explains that they have been set adrift with only the clothes on their backs and one canteen of water for each. As the players row towards shore, Jeff intercepts them and brings his craft to a halt. He informs them that on the beach are two machetes, a map to the water supply, and TWO IMMUNITY NECKLACES. The first man and first woman ashore will win the first immunity.
The contestants decide to remain in the boat, and row as a team closer. They are still a mile from shore. As they row, one lady, Wanda, cheers the oarsmen on with one of many songs she has written for Survivor. The others think she is a loon! A few hundred yards from shore, two players, Jonathan and Stephanie, decide to take the plunge and jump ship. They think they'll swim faster than the boat can be rowed, but they are wrong! The rest leave them waaaaaaaay, behind. A couple dozen yards from shore and then the real race begins. Ian is the first man to reach the post holding the immunity necklaces. Jolanda is the first woman. The rest bring up the rear.
Everyone is confused. All 20 are on a single beach. It looks like they are all one tribe. After some socializing, it's determined that 5 will take the map and find the water supply. The rest begin work on a shelter. Several people be- gin to demonstrate skills and weaknesses. Janu, for example, expertly climbs up a tree to tie-off the two main supports for the shelter. Jolanda, on the other hand, shows herself as being very bossy. The water-fetchers not only find the water, but also a bag of running shoes. An attempt to make fire fails, but some coconuts are found and consumed. Some early alliances are formed.
Day Two, and Jeff arrives to greet them. He calls Ian and Jolanda out front. They will begin the process of dividing the group up into two tribes. Those chosen then chose, alternating back and forth selecting a man or a woman. The last two left are booted immediately. Jonathan is the booted man. The woman not chosen is none other than Wanda. Everyone is teary-eyed as they depart. Wanda bursts into one last song from the boat. Jeff hands out buffs to each tribe, Koror (Ian's), and Ulong (Jolanda's). Jeff tells them both tribes will stay at one camp, another surprise. There will be another challenge shortly.
Angie, who had thought she had an alliance with Cory, feels bad. Cory did not pick her when it was his turn. Instead, Angie was the last woman chosen by Ulong tribe. Angie is a tad different with her numerous tatoos, Cory is about as gay as they come. They felt a bond as being the different ones compared to the rest of the players. The two tribes split up to have a strategy session. Koror has more older players and discuss how they are smarter than the others. Ulong discuss how they have the younger, stronger tribe.
It's time for a combined Reward-Immunity Challenge. Jeff takes back the individual immunity necklaces from Ian and Jolanda. Immunity is now tribal, and unveils a small idol which looks a bit like Willard of Koror. The event it- self is an obstacle course. The object is for each tribe to reach a pit and un- cover three metal boxes and a set of paddles, and take them all to their mat. Once there, they may untie the paddles and one or more of the cases. The cases contain essentials, fire making gear, food, and fresh water cans. Each tribe may then take one or more of the cases to the beach, where they board an outrigger and paddle off-shore to retrieve a flag. First tribe to return with their flag wins immunity, plus whatever goodies they brought. The race is essentially even until both tribes begin untying their goods. Koror, being the "smart tribe", makes the smart move. They only untie the paddles and the case of fire making gear, then move off swiftly to the beach. Stephanie urges her fellow members of Ulong to follow suit, but self-appointed leader Jolanda will have none of that. She wants it all. Ulong falls behind. They seem to begin to gain some ground back when they board their outrigger, but Ulong's paddling is uncoordinated and they go in the wrong direction. Koror wins this one easily. Jeff hands over the immunity idol and tells Koror that since they won, they will have a choice. They may return to their old beach and make it their home, or take a chance and live on a new, 2nd beach. Koror chooses to try the new beach.
Both tribes head for their separate homes. Koror is having a great time, till a large wave swamps their outrigger. They are all tossed into the water, in- cluding the steel case full of flints and fire making apparatus. Uncle Scuba- cameraman knows where it is, but the rest don't. Ian, Dolphin Boy, thinks he saw something. This is only the start of their problems. Over at Ulong, the long knives come out. Jolanda chats up some tribe members about booting Angie. Tatoo Girl is seen as weak and freaky, whereas Jolanda claims to be stronger then half the men of Koror. She's probably right. Jolanda then talks with Stephanie, but Steph is quiet and cool. She listens to Jolanda but makes no commitment. Stephanie already has other ideas of her own. She chats up Angie and others about booting Jolanda. Afterall, it was Jolanda's fault that they lost.
It's time for Tribal Council. Jeff inquires as to what the biggest surprise has been. Ulong is confused about everything and no decent answer surfaces. We get some blathering about how young and strong they are. Jeff asks Angie how she feels being the last person picked? Does she think she'll be the first booted? Angie is insecure and feels vulnerable. Stephanie chimes in about how there are others who have more to blame for the lost. Jolanda tells Jeff that they are leaderless, but she's more than happy to take charge and whip Ulong into shape. It's time to vote. Angie gets 3 votes, then three are read for Jolanda. Then a fourth, then a fifth. Then last vote doesn't matter as Jolanda is booted. She disgusted with the outcome. Jeff snuffs out her flame and Jolanda takes her walk of shame. Jeff then tells the rest of Ulong they better get their acts together.
SPOILERS: Koror, the smart tribe, may have made a huge mistake in selecting the new beach, as it has a rodent problem. They also attempt to retrieve the case of flints. Meanwhile, over at Ulong, love may be blooming!
