Abra Moore is one of the coolest female soloists I have heard in quite awhile. When listening to Abra's debut album Sing, you'll find deep lyrics and clever melodies in songs like Prayer for an Angel, Sweet Chariot, and a song written for her mother, entitled Sing. Abra's most recent album Strangest Places, also has a lot of really cool songs, among my favorites are Happiness, and Four Leaf Clover.
Abra's music has a magical sound, and she's been my fav since I first heard her music, about a year and a half ago. According to Abra, music has always been a big part of her life."This music thing just kind of chose me," says Abra. "I come from a very artistic family, so I've always done this. My father is an artist from the Beat generation. I grew up hearing Billie Holiday, Chet Baker and the whole jazz era. I was into the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Judy Garland, Bette Midler, Tom Petty and also all the '70s stuff. It all colored my palette."
Abra's first single off of the album Strangest Places is the song Four Leaf Clover."That song was written exactly as it happened. I really was just sitting around thinking it over, and it was just a little too much". Abra has explained. She likes to keep her lyric's as real as possible. So,she uses her own experiences as song paths.Abra never thought she would make a career out of her music.
It came naturally. Abra wrote her first song when she was 6 yrs old, while growing up in Hawaii. She learned piano as a teenager, then later moved to Europe where she played in small clubs, whenever possible. "I did a lot of my growing up overseas," she says. Abra attended the University of Hawaii, while studying music. She met up with some friends who were interested in forming a band.Soon after, she and her friends had a band called Poi Dog Pondering.
Later, Abra moved to Texas, and started to record her debut album Sing(produced by Mitch Watkins).Critics and fans were starting to hear and enjoy her great music. Then, came the recording of her second album,Strangest Places(also produced by Mitch Watkins).Abra's songs were soon being played in various places.Such as in background music for TV projects(such as the movies,Excess Baggage, and Sliding Doors. And,the hit television series Dawsons Creek). She then went on to do a European Tour. Abra was even nominated for a grammy in 1998.Eventhough the grammy was given to someone else, there's always next year, right?I can't wait to see what the future holds for Abra, and her music.Goodluck Abra!
