It struck around 7:30 P.M. the evening of July 3rd, 1999 completely devastating this small rural northern Michgian town.
The tornado of '99 made it's brief 20 second appearance with very little warning. Now the community struggles to rebuild through faith and help of neighbors and friends.
What you are about to see below is the aftermath of that tragic summer evening storm as seen through the lens of photographer Harold Rhoades of Fairview!
On other pages will be updates of the reconstruction and testimony of a small towns indestructible spirit as documented by NNN and those of you who wish to submit pictures or thoughts!
NOTE: We have been informed by the WILDERNESS CHRONICLE that pictures of the tornado disaster were sought to be archived at Steiner Museum as part of the history of the area. Editor Mary Louise DeMott tells us that the Chronicle and Steiner's are in search of: 1) Pictures of Comins - Past and Present 2) Pictures of recent tornado devastation 3) Stories of what your family/friends experienced before, during and after the tornado 4) Audio tape cassettes with your story would be greatly appreciated.
Editor Demott tells us also that Material received by March 1, 2000, were included in a memorial booklet available for viewing at Steiners Museum and at the Michigan Magazine Museum.
