Steve
Yzerman
Steve Yzerman may just be one of the greatest
players ever to compete in the game of hockey. I think the NHL is very
fortunate to be able to have the name "Steve Yzerman" associated with the
all-time greatness of the sport. He has received numerous honors, yet the
most rememberable to his long time fans, the Detroit Red Wings back to
back Stanley Cups.
Steve played his first game as a Detroit
Red Wing on October 5, 1983. He had a goal and an assist. He was then the
youngest player ever named to the All-Star team, and runner up for the
Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year honors. Steve became the youngest
captain in Red Wings history...at the age of 21.
Then, two years ago, his dream came true.
He and the Detroit Red Wings won him his first Stanley Cup. Not only did
they accomplish that once, but they proceeded to take the Stanley back
to back years.

"...after winning last year and
this year, I'm having the greatest time in hockey in my life." -Steve
Yzerman
-
"The only thing we really care about
is winning and playing well together, guys are incredibly unselfish."
-Steve Yzerman
-
"I don't know how to describe
how I feel. I'm glad the game is over, but I wish it never would have ended."
-Steve Yzerman June 7, 1997
-
"When you have that trophy
around, you don't sleep a whole lot. We had a couple of parties with it,
we had it out on Lake St. Clair. I think my favorite part was when we took
it to Ottawa to my parents' home and invited over some of the guys I grew
up playing hockey with, some of my coaches on teams I played on when I
was 10 and 11 that I haven't seen in quite a while."
- Steve Yzerman on taking Stanley home
