Episode Summary:
After Caitlin, Griffen, and Jim view a slide projector show of family
pictures that Jim has put together to show at Jim and Dori's upcoming anniversary
party, Caitlin is reminded of the fact that she is living with a cousin
and that she has no immediate family. This begins Caitlin's search to find
her dad, David Seeger, who left when Caitlin was only four years old. He
was an artist and said that he couldn't make it in Philadelphia. When Griffen
asks Caitlin what she would do if she found her dad, Caitlin says, "I don't
know. Talk to him. Let him know I'm around. He probably doesn't know about
my mom dying." At Jim and Dori's anniversary party at a local diner,
Griffen and his friend Brett do a stand-up comedy act telling jokes about
Jim and Dori. Griffen starts to include jokes about Caitlin to make her
feel like part of the family. Caitlin is angry and accuses Griffen of trying
to make her feel guilty for trying to find her dad. When Caitlin first
arrived from Philadelphia, Griffen wanted nothing to do with her. Now,
however, he is deeply hurt over the idea of her possibly leaving. In the
end, Caitlin feels that she is not yet ready to meet her dad and she decides
to stay with the Lowe's.
Episode Highlights:
1. Dori has a talk with Caitlin who is sitting on a fence. Dori asks
Caitlin if she is okay. Caitlin seems unsure of herself and says, "Yeah.
No. I don't know. I'm so scared!" Dori says, "No matter what happens, you
are a part of this family."
2. Jim takes things very hard. He has a very honest and personal talk
with Griffen. Jim says, "Maybe she was looking for her father because I
haven't been there for her." Griffen tells Jim, "Dad, she loves you. She
just doesn't know it yet."
3. Caitlin releases her horse Bandit. The Parent Search Agency calls
and tells Jim that they have found three potential matches for Caitlin's
father. Jim goes outside to tell Caitlin. As they begin to talk, Bandit
returns. Caitlin says with sadness in her voice, "He doesn't know where his
home is. And neither do I." Jim and Caitlin begin one of the most moving conversations
ever to air on the show. Caitlin confesses, "You know, I always tried to
not get too close to you. I always thought that if a father got to know me,
he would leave me, too." Jim tells Caitlin that she is not the reason her
father left. Caitlin begins to cry and asks, "How do you know?" Jim responds,
"Look, I know you're not my daughter. But if you were, there is nothing that
would make me let you go. I can't imagine my family without you." Caitlin
then cries that she is not yet ready to see her dad. Jim tells Caitlin that
if she stays, maybe the two of them could figure out together what fathers
and daughters are supposed to be. It would be a "practice" round for when
Caitlin is finally ready to meet her dad.
