Episode Summary:
Caitlin has a passion for photography and decides to join the photojournalism
club at school. She has trouble, however, getting her photos accepted. Mr.
Krolo, a teacher, acknowledges that her photos are artistic, but says that
they aren't appropriate for the school newspaper. He tells Caitlin to take
pictures that are more suitable to what he wants. Caitlin refuses to change
her style and angrily walks away. Mr. Krolo's criticisms have a very personal
effect on Caitlin. She gets frustrated and quits the photojournalism club.
With the help of Griffen, however, Caitlin eventually finds a balanced way
to deal with the situation. She begins to understand that it isn't always
about doing things the way that she wants, but she also holds on to her
desire to pursue creativity with her photography. She eventually produces
the type of photos that the teacher wants. Mr. Krolo decides to publish
her pictures in the school newspaper.
Episode Highlights:
1. Caitlin has a dramatic confrontation with Mr. Krolo after her first
photos are rejected. Caitlin asks, "Why didn't you publish any of my photos?
I gave you some great shots!" Mr. Krolo responds, "No! You gave me some
artistic ones! If I were decorating an office, they'd be great! Unfortunately,
I'm publishing a newspaper!" Caitlin asks, "What's your point?" Mr. Krolo
answers, "The photo tells me as much about the photographer as it does the
event. What yours say is that you have talent, but you're too determined
to do things your own way!" Caitlin angrily walks away and declares with
equal bluntness, "You're right! I'm not changing my style! For you! Or for
anyone!"
2. After Caitlin quits the photojournalism club, it is Griffen who
encourages her to keep going in spite of the fact that her photos have been
criticized. Caitlin tells Griffen, "I thought this was going to be my chance
to prove I was actually good at something." Griffen responds, "So? Now you
know for next time." Caitlin says, "There isn't going to be a next time!"
Griffen says with surprise, "You quit? That is so typical of you!" Caitlin
says, "He was trying to tell me what to do!" Griffen says, "He's a teacher!
He's supposed to tell you what to do! Sometimes you have to make sacrifices
to get what you want. All I know is that you love taking pictures! But you're
gonna' stop because someone thinks that what you did isn't good? For someone
who thinks you're tough, you sure give up easily."
3. Photography is Caitlin's way of making sense of the world. It is
something that she started doing after the death of her mother. It is no surprise,
therefore, that Caitlin is very passionate about what she does. She says
in her opening prologue, "I guess I like taking pictures so much because
I can keep the things I like and throw out the things I don't. I don't have
to listen to anybody. I don't have to talk to anybody. I'm just able to make
the world look exactly the way I want it. And once my pictures are developed,
I get to hold on to that world forever." (Click
