Episode Summary:
Caitlin wants to go to a photography show in the city on Saturday but
is unable afford a bus ticket. As an excuse to get to the city, Caitlin
volunteers to go with Taylor who is going into the city to buy a class present
for their teacher, Mr. Watson, who is going to get married. Griffen also
goes into the city with Brett and Eric to buy a new amplifier for his guitar.
All goes wrong very quickly. Taylor wants $20 more to buy a better present.
Caitlin attempts to get more money by gambling in a card game but looses
several dollars. Caitlin and Taylor accidentally drop the remaining $70 on
the street. Eric and Brett find the $70 on the street that Caitlin and Taylor
lost and they use it to buy a better amplifier. Brett and Eric return the
amplifier after they discover what happened. Meanwhile, Caitlin discovers
a young boy named Tommy who is lost in the city and needs money for a bus
ticket home. Eric, Brett, Griffen, Taylor, and Caitlin have $130 that Eric
and Brett got by returning the amplifier. They use it to buy a bus ticket
for Tommy believing that it is more important to help the boy. Griffen then
begins to play his guitar on the street. Griffen, Brett, Eric, Taylor, and
Caitlin sing as pedestrians throw money into Griffen's guitar case. They
have found a way to get money for the amplifier and the present.
Episode Highlights:
1. Caitlin and Taylor have always been at odds with each other. This
episode highlights that conflict. After Caitlin looses the money in the
card game, Taylor asks, "Why did I listen to you?" Caitlin responds, "If
you weren't such a status-obsessed princess, you would have had that present
two hours ago!" Taylor says, "I was trying to get the best present!" Caitlin
angrily corrects her: "Best label!" Taylor fires back, "If you came
from a real family, you'd understand why names are so important!"
Caitlin throws her drink on Taylor. Taylor screams, "You are so evil!"
and sprays her drink on Caitlin. It is during this "battle" that the money
is unknowingly dropped on the street.
2. Caitlin sees a young boy wandering aimlessly around. She later spots
him stealing licorice and chases him. The boy is afraid and won't talk.
Caitlin says, "You got guts. You're not asking for help. You know, I did
that once. I spent three days on the street because I was too proud to ask
for help. I was shaking. Totally hungry." The boy finally tells Caitlin
that his name is Tommy. His mom lives in Seattle. He was on a bus heading
to visit his dad who lives in Chicago. He got off for food when the bus stopped.
He lost his wallet and ticket. A new driver wouldn't let him back on.
3. Caitlin's closing epilogue: "Money's a funny thing. You think it'll
buy happiness, but it just drives you crazy. In fact, it can ruin your whole
day. But sometimes it can buy you happiness, and it can make your
whole day." [This is said as Caitlin takes a picture of Tommy getting on
the bus. Tommy waves. He has a big smile on his face!]
