Vanity of Miracles

Robert Diffin

Psalm 2

Psalm 2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? (Whole Chapter: Psalm 2 In context: Psalm 2:1-2)

Right at this point in time there is a great sweeping effort underway to do just that sweep the bible right under the rug. Many noted experts on biblical history and archaeology (called minimalists) are claiming that the bible is nothing more than a collection of folklore stories with no basis in documentable events in any period of time. You see, there are some men who will receive nothing of the Spirit and there are some who will only receive when it sneaks up on them and performs a "miracle". Having witnessed more than one miracle I think I understand the problem.

You see, God never set out to be in the miracle business in the first place. Miracles came about when men entered into covenant with God. For example, when Moses met God on holy ground he saw the burning bush that was not consumed. When Gideon took up God's calling to lead the army against the Midianites God made a concession by allowing him to see a sign.

Now believe me, it is extremely difficult to properly document a true miracle even though it seems they are televised daily.

But here is the shocking part; a miracle can not be explained apart from its acceptance or rejection by the heart which witnesses it. Think about it; if you experience something you believe is a miracle and you accept it as such then the matter is closed for you. But if you don't wish to accept it you will find a way to explain it as happenstance or coincidence regardless how long it takes you to explain it. That is the simple truth of the matter. This argument holds whether there is such a thing as a miracle or not. Like faith, you must believe or be an unbeliever.

If you ever really begin to understand this simple truth you will finally understand why Christ in His majesty was saddened when the multitudes favored miracles rather than the truth He had to share. It would have made more sense for them to beg for farthings at His feet when He had gold to share. And such a fine gold at that.

You see, modern arguments from experts as I have mentioned center on things like the mechanics of how the Red Sea was parted and how long it took conquer Palestine and hold God in the balance by trying to determine what role He may or may not have played in biblical history. These are dangerous arguments to wage.

Speaking as one who has been very priveleged to have seen a miracle and felt the awesome power of God I can tell you this: "I would not want to try to tell God how he should or shouldn't have done anything."

And speaking as one who has a personal relationship with Jesus I know that He can do anything anwhere anytime with nothing. Just think about that for a minute.
