DISNEY ON DVD
For overy sixty years, Walt Disney Pictures has been the leader in family entertainment. While most known for their animated feature films, Disney has also become involved with a number of TV shows (such as Home Improvement) and a number of successful non-animated films. In all forms of entertainment, Disney seems to oftens strive to set the standard of excellence.
However this is not the case for Disney's DVDs. The studio has not only been slow to embrace the newest of home theatre mediums, but also has created a number of subpar discs. These DVDs have typically included NO special features (although the packages mention such standard features such as "Interactive Menus" and "Full Color Disc Art" as being extras) and for widescreen titles lacked anamorphic support. These early releases showed that Disney has more of an interest in having people buy two different versions of the discs (letterboxed now, anamorphic later) instead of planning for the future.
The point of this page and petition is twofold. It is primarily to inform Disney of the general public's interest in owning many Disney films (both animated and live-action) on DVD, which the studio hasn't expressed any interest in releasing to this point. Secondly, it is to encourage Disney to put more time and effort into their DVD releases, to create the noteworthy releases they did for A Bug's Life: Collector's Edition, Tarzan: Collector's Edition, Toy Story & Toy Story 2: The Ultimate Toy Box and The Fantasia Anthology. In these aforementioned DVDs, the studio clearly showed that they can produce some high-quality extra-filled discs if they want to. Where applicable (all non-animation films) Disney/Buena Vista should make an effort to release the majority of DVDs with BOTH anamorphic widescreen and fullscreen versions of a film--that way everyone is pleased. After all, shouldn't a studio that is the leader in family entertainment also be the leader in family DVDs?

At least Disney is showing some interest in embracing the DVD medium by releasing these films on discs. What is yet to be seen though is consistent dedication to releasing DVDs in the best possible fashion, with special features and optimum video and audio presentation. Many of the titles to be released later this year are films that deserve to be given the entire Collector's Edition treatment, complete with material on the making of the film and other film-related content.
