This movie takes place 2 1/2 years after Kirk's historic five year mission. It starts off when this mysterious cloud appears in Klingon space. Three cruisers are sent out to destroy it, but it destroyed them instead. Then you see Spock fail to achieve the Kolinahr when the cloud calls to him. Then you see Admiral Kirk go to Starfleet Headquarters to ask if he can reassume command of the newly refitted U.S.S. Enterprise. This knocked current captain Will Decker down to first officer. After being launched from Spacedock, the Enterprise races over to the cloud. After a warp engine imbalance that nearly destroyed the ship, Spock shows up to join the crew in their mission and to repair the Enterprise's engines. When they approach the cloud, they are attacked, but Spock is able to achieve contact with the cloud and stopped the attack. After an incredibly long entrance through the cloud's barrier, the crew is attacked by some kind of probe. This Probe assimilates the newest member of the crew, Lt. Ilia. As the Enterprise continues to go towards the center of the cloud, another probe was sent to interact with the crew. This one was in the form of Ilia. The probe establishes that the one responsible was called V'Ger. Spock tries to make contact with V'Ger through a mind-meld, but it almost killed him. Eventually, Kirk discovered that the cloud was on it's way to Earth to find it's creator, who was obviously dead since the cloud was being controlled by Earth probe Voyager VI. After Kirk makes direct contact with V'Ger. It is established that V'ger intends to physically join with a human. Capt. Decker volunteers himself, despite Kirk's objections, to join and the cloud and V'ger vanish leaving only the Enterprise. At the end, Spock chooses to stay on the Enterprise and they take her on a proper shakedown cruise. The last thing we see is the Enterprise warping out to her next adventure.
