A Corrupt Judge

Judge Warren Henry Bristol

Warren Bristol was born on March 19, 1823 at Stafford, New York. He was educated at Yates Academy, Lima Seminary, Wilson Collegiate Institute, and Fowler's Law School. He was admitted at Lockport, New York. He lived in Minnesota and worked as a mail carrier for a few years. He was married back at Lockport, New York on April 20, 1854 to Louisa Armstrong. He became a district attorney of Goodhue County, Minnesota in 1854 and later became a probate judge. He was a member of the Republican convention that renominated Abraham Lincoln at Baltimore, Maryland in 1864. In 1872, President Grant appointed Bristol associate justice of the supreme court of New Mexico. He became good friends with L. G. Murphy, J. J. Dolan, and J. H. Riley and also joined the Santa Fe Ring. He was a coward who shied from gunfire and gunmen. He held court twice a year in Lincoln. He served as the judge for most of the court milestones in the Lincoln County War. He also was the judge at Billy the Kid's trial for the murder of Sheriff William Brady and Bristol sentenced the Kid to death. In 1885, Bristol resigned from being judge. On January 12, 1890 at Deming, New Mexico, Bristol died.
