Clerk of the Tunstall Store

Samuel R. Corbet

Sam Corbet was born in North Carolina in what is probably 1850. He eventually reached New Mexico and in the summer of 1877, he became the clerk at John Tunstall's store in Lincoln. All through the war, Corbet remained at the store. He testified against Lt. Colonel Dudley at Dudley's court of inquiry in 1879. After the war, he married Teresa Phillipowski. After this, he became a clerk at the Ellis store. He later became a postmaster in Lincoln and a deputy probate clerk. In 1882, his wife died and he married Josefa baca. By 1883, he was a probate clerk by 1890 he was a superintendent of schools. He then left New Mexico for Mexico. He later returned briefly to New Mexico then went to Texas and married a third time. He died at Miller Grove, Texas sometime in 1923.
